Why so many of us struggle to learn a language
Many of us spend years on a language at school or months on an app – but still can’t follow a real conversation. This isn’t because you’re ‘bad at languages’. It’s because learning at school or through an app misses out the parts that matter most.
This guide shows you how to learn any language in a way that suits you :
built on consistency, enjoyment, and a few key principles anyone can apply.
Three Pillars
🌊 Passive Learning
Immersion makes up most of your time with the language, and fits around the things you already do: your commute, cooking, or a series in the evening.
⛩️ Active Learning
Even five or ten minutes a day is enough. Learn whole phrases you actually want to use, and say them aloud. Done with content and resources you enjoy.
🪷 Practice
Use what you learn in conversations with people – typing, voice messages, or calls – whenever feels right for you.
These are the essentials every approach needs. Beyond them, the guide helps you shape your learning around your unique goals, interests, and preferences, with a step-by-step plan to bring it all together in a way that’s sustainable and enjoyable.
No rigid ‘hacks’, ‘rules’, or ‘systems’ that don’t work for everyone.

About me
Hi, I’m Sean. I began teaching myself languages in 2018 whilst studying History at the University of Leeds, including a year studying at the Sorbonne in Paris conducted entirely in French. Since then, I’ve continued learning languages independently for research, enjoyment, and daily life – including Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese.
This process has shaped the way I think about language learning.
I have a Diploma in English Language Teaching (DELTA) from the University of Cambridge and have over seven years’ experience teaching both online and in the classroom.
I now live in Hanoi, where I’m completing a Master’s degree in History at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, studying entirely in Vietnamese.
This guide brings together everything I’ve learnt as a self-directed learner and as a teacher.
